Geometry to Real World

Geometry Class

Class and Instructional Unit: Geometry Class

Claim of Growth: I grew in my ability to recognize geometry and its occurrence in the world around us.

Specific Learning Endeavor: Frank Lloyd Wright Westcott house

Purpose, Process, and Products: We first visited the westcott as a class field trip, learned about Frank Lloyd Wright. How he connected with the Westcott family, which is clearly demonstrated through the design of the house and how it fitted the daily routine and wants of the family. After that we were split into three groups, one took pictures of the house using the artist viewpoints we were taught in class, the other took a tour and learned the background of this projects research, the last group sat in the garden and discussed the geometric connections to the house, and drew an image for each one of the key terms. When we were back in the classroom the project was formally presented along with the rubrics that we were prepared to meet. We then participated in multiple mini videos that got us familiar with the limits and possibilities that our video is defined by. When starting to draft for our final piece, my group chose a theme that would be represented through our video which was the use of ninety degree angles on horizontal lines. Then we went through all the pictures my group had taken defined them to the top twenty five that represented our theme. With the assistance of the multimedia manager of the Westcott program we learned about transitions and miniature movements of a picture and its overall effect to the piece. After that we took all that knowledge and created our video to meet the requirements.

Artifact 1: The first and personally to me the most important is the final piece, or our video.  I say this important because this is where all the preparation and effort was leading to. And is the summary of what we have gained through this learning process.

How Artifact 1 Exhibits Growth: This video allows us visually show the audience the relations between the images I took at the Westcott house and connect them to the terms I was learning in my math class. The video highlighted the repetition and symmetry that Frank Lloyd Wright used in his work.

Artifact 2: This would be the artist statement that backs up the Westcott video.

How artifact 2 Exhibits Growth: The Artist statement gave the audience our purpose of creating the video. It also displayed what we were trying to highlight for those who might not be familiar with the terms we were presenting. This is very important so other can be aware of another connection found between Geometry and the Westcott house.

Impact of Growth: This project started off the geometry class. Having this connection to the problem solving and knowing how we can connect it to the world around us really helps me stay engaged throughout the school year and want to hold onto the knowledge that I know I will be using in upcoming jobs.
