Understand & Speak 中文

Chinese - Quia and Quizlet

My tenth grade year I have been presented with many learning endeavors. One project that has consistently developed and maintained my knowledge in my Chinese 2 DEP class is the Quia and Quizlet programs. I have used both of these tools since the beginning of the school year and have grown in my ability to understand and speak Chinese.

The Quizlet program is an online, free of cost, studying tool. The program allows me to access the set of cards my beautiful Chinese teacher has created for me. When I get to them, I am then presented a range of options to study the material with. I personally like to start with the flash card that way I become familiar with the overall objective to the text. For the most part, the class homework is to complete the ‘SPELLER’ function, which give us the meaning and verbally displays the Chinese. We then have to translate by typing the right characters in Chinese. This is a little challenging because we have to remember the pinyin but it also helps me learn how to speak it out loud. This function allows me to recognize Chinese characters and relate it to the meaning, overall contributing to my growth in understanding the Chinese language. It keeps looping the set until we get everything right and it takes me a good hour each school night to complete. There is also a function called pretest. This is an automatic generated test based off of the terms and definitions. I can set up the test to be matching, multiple choice, true or false, or even definition based. On the nights that I do prepare for a lesson test I am usually on for a longer amount of time with the pretest or flashcard tools just to review everything.

The Quia program is what allowed us to test the material that we were collecting throughout the school year. Every day we are given a quiz off of the homework we were given the night before. It then gives us the written test and we are scored on correctness on this quiz. The test is formed with a basic question or English definition with a text box under. Afterward it gives us a report of what we have missed that way we are aware of the material we need to review. With this continuous practice and review everyday it becomes a lot easier to remember and incorporate into verbal lessons during and outside of class.

I have been able to grow in both understanding the material and then displaying that material verbally. I have attached some artifacts to demonstrate my use of the programs. On this page I have a slide show of some of my study techniques I use with the Quizlet software. These snapshots were taken based off of a section of our Shopping lesson. It taught me basic shopping text and clothing description. Each slide is a different way I can use the program to study. The first on is the flash cards, that help me really grasp the man concept of the lesson. The next page is the Learn tool, which is homework on most school nights. The last slide is the pretest, which is mainly done on my own in preparation for the quiz next day. The picture below my slide show is a snapshot of the Quia test that I was given based off of the material I was reviewing in my Quizlet slideshow.  This is what I prepare for every time I study with the other software. Both of these have allowed me to grow in my Chinese 3 DEP class. I am looking forward to using both the Quizlet and Quia to not only finish this class, but to study material in my other education courses.
