Understanding Genocide

World History - Genocide & Conflict Unit

Class/Discipline Addressed:

This was an integrated project between World History and Language arts, I was informed about conflict and genocide through an integrated unit.

Claim of Growth:

I think that I now have a better understanding of different conflicts and genocides. In addition its effect on the international community.

What this change looks like:

I am now able to recognize conflicts and connect them to modern struggles. I can now look at a conflict and understand how previous events lead up to such a impactful scar on history. I can find what makes genocide and how the individual steps to genocide are wrong and unmoral. I can use my knowledge in conflict to understand and reflect on what is happening in the world around me.

Evidence from other classes:

In other classes I am now able to relate new content to past world history content. For example, I am further looking into diseases impact through Emerging Epidemics in my Language arts class. I have now been able to grasp the concept of globalization and the big picture from learning how to understand the impact of a major conflict. This has helped me make connections and stay involved during class discussions.

Specific learning endeavor:

The Conflict and Genocide unit I studied throughout my World History Class.

Purpose, process, and products:

Prezi allowed us to understand and record the information that we were collecting over our long period of research. Every time we learned about a new conflict or genocide we would input it into our Prezi PowerPoint. This became our source for basic definitions, Conflict Events, reflection, Q&A, and comparison. We also maintained a connection between our language arts class which was in the process of reading a book of our choice relating to a world genocide in the past. The Prezi supports my growth because it was a place for me to organize and tract all information I have collected throughout this unit. I was also able to relate the different information from different conflicts to each other in an overall presentation of my Prezi to my class.

We also learned about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict toward the end of this unit. The product was a persuasive letter to our Representative about our stance on the conflict. My stance to this conflict was “I believe that the United States should support a two state solution without negotiations because of the past mistreatment of human rights that both sides inflict on one another and because it leaves an impending opportunity for them to negotiate as separate nations.” I had to really stretch my understanding of conflict to grasp the length and content of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I think that is why this letter is such a strong supporter of my claim of growth.

Prezi artifact:

My Artifact would be my Prezi Slides and the overall information that I have learned to develop my understanding of conflict and international response. I would mainly want to highlight some of my reflections on major conflicts such as the Bosnian Genocide because of the required understanding and realizations I must have had to make in order to state my opinions on them.

Letter artifact:

The letter I wrote to my representative had my claim and evidence to support. The letter also contained information from previous events such as the Northern Ireland conflict. In addition, had quotes and key points that we have collected from guest speakers who have presented to my grade throughout learning about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

How artifacts exhibit growth:

Both of these artifacts required me to exercise the newly acquired information in order to obtain new content that was being taught. These artifacts are able to represent my process of keeping background and my ability to push a stance for the future.

Implication for future growth:

I could use my knowledge to help me choose a stance on future conflicts. This way I am educated in my opinion and maybe I could even highlight a solution that will be able to prevent the continuation of a conflict.

How I will continue to grow:

I will continue to try and learn as much as I can about past and current conflicts. That way I have a deeper background for making choices and it will be easier to support my claims. I will also try harder to try to relate more to the information I have learned, this way I am practicing basic information to a further extent.
